We are currently presenting part 4 of our four-part series on the Next Generation Solutions for aging in place. If you haven’t already, read Part 1 regarding the issues that are created by the aging in place model and Part 2 where we explored the hurdles in creating a bathroom that can accommodate these issues. Part 3 presented options that are currently available from Schluter. In Part 4, we will explore further options offered by Schluter.
Another portion of the Kerdi system is that of the Schluter- Ditra uncoupling membrane for tiled floors. Ditra provides effective uncoupling, or a forgiving shear interface through its unique geometric configuration. It allows for in-plane movement that effectively neutralizes the differential movement stresses between the substrate and the tile, thus eliminating the major cause of cracking and delaminating of the tiled surface.
Ditra is also waterproof and provides vapor management. The membrane protects the substrate from moisture penetration since most substrates today are moisture sensitive, but also allows moisture to escape from beneath the tile. If this moisture was not allowed to escape, it would eventually damage the surface of the floor.
Ditra can also be used with floor-warming systems. Mat systems are easily installed underneath the membrane or cables can be placed wherever heat is desired without creating height differences in the floor. Self-leveling compounds are not required to encapsulate the cables, significantly reducing installation time and effort.
The unique geometric framework of the Ditra membrane also provides another benefit. When used between the tile and substrate, Ditra mimics the load distribution seen in the structural forms of pillars or columns. The Ditra material effectively transfers the loads from the tile covering into the substrate, and since it is virtually incompressible, this load distribution does not interfere with the uncoupling benefit of the material.
As the age of clients increases and the demand for stylish solutions for barrier-free bathrooms exists, manufacturers are keeping up with the demand by creating innovative solutions. By knowing the issues that arise in these new designs, imagination can still live harmoniously with smart building practices and we can keep up with the demands of the next generation.
