Installation of Tile
Over Painted Wall Surfaces
Tile installations over
painted wall surfaces can be done successfully with proper preparation and
setting materials. The following guidelines will help in achieving a successful
installation:
- Oil-base paints must
be removed from all surfaces to be tiled.
- Paint may be
scarified, sanded or removed with a commercial paint remover. If a paint
remover is used, it is necessary to wash the walls with a detergent to take
off any residue left from the paint remover.
- Interior latex
housepaints may be covered directly by tile provided the area to be tiled is
not in a wet area.
- If tiling over an
interior latex house paint, care must be taken to determine that the paint is
sound, well bonded to the surface and not in a wet area.
- Whenever in doubt,
remove paint to ensure the best possible bond. Use a suitable mastic,
latex-modified mortar or epoxy to achieve proper bonding of the tile.
- If removal of paint is
not possible, fasten an additional underlayment to the walls. This can be done
with wire lath and mortar or a cement board products such as UTIL-A-CRETE.
