Installation of Tile Over Painted Wall Surfaces

Tile installations over painted wall surfaces can be done successfully with proper preparation and setting materials. The following guidelines will help in achieving a successful installation:

  1. Oil-base paints must be removed from all surfaces to be tiled.
  2. Paint may be scarified, sanded or removed with a commercial paint remover. If a paint remover is used, it is necessary to wash the walls with a detergent to take off any residue left from the paint remover.
  3. Interior latex housepaints may be covered directly by tile provided the area to be tiled is not in a wet area.
  4. If tiling over an interior latex house paint, care must be taken to determine that the paint is sound, well bonded to the surface and not in a wet area.
  5. Whenever in doubt, remove paint to ensure the best possible bond. Use a suitable mastic, latex-modified mortar or epoxy to achieve proper bonding of the tile.
  6. If removal of paint is not possible, fasten an additional underlayment to the walls. This can be done with wire lath and mortar or a cement board products such as UTIL-A-CRETE.
