Installation
Recommendations for Large Size Tiles
PROBLEM: Large
format ceramic tiles and natural stones require special attention from the tile
setter in order to provide a quality, uniform installation. Special
considerations must be given to prevent cracked tiles and slippage.
SOLUTION:
- The maximum variation
in the subfloor should not exceed 1/8" in 10' 0" from the required plane.
Bridging high and low points in subfloors can lead to cracked tiles. Floors
can be leveled using cement mortar mixtures.
- Install tile using a
1/2" x 1/2" square notch trowel with a medium bed mortar such as LATICRETE
220, a factory-prepared mortar specifically designed for large format
ceramic tiles and natural stones. Medium bed mortars support heavy tiles,
reducing slippage problems and providing a thicker bed to help in leveling the
tiles.
- Irregular-backed tiles
such as Mexican pavers and ungauged stone also require back-buttering of each
tile.
- Tiles should be "beat
in" to ensure proper bond and to adjust the true level of the tiles.
